Artist Statement
I like the freeness and chaos of abstractions. I am engaged by textures I see in the world around me, whether it be the slate tile on my bathroom floor, or a cracked, peeling plaster wall. I believe that lends a natural quality to my work.
I build up my paintings with generous layers of modelling paste, plaster and heavy bodied acrylics. I use the heavier bodied acrylics to get a base of intense hues that I want a hint of at the completion of my work. The painting begins to transform through pours, floods, tilting, pooling and layering. Allowing the paint to flow naturally and the pigments to separate gives dimension to the piece. I use expressive rich hues, surface textures, transparencies and intensities of color to add depth. The pooling of the paint gives an impression of 3 dimension, galaxies and swirling cosmos.
My current body of work is non-objective. My hope is that those who view my work are engaged by the piece, want to touch it, be drawn in by it. Feel a sense of serenity.
